DID THE CORN MAKE THE DISCIPLES HUNGRY? (Matthew 12:1)

New American Standard Version

"At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath through the grainfields, and His disciples became hungry..."
King James Bible

"At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat."
They became hungry walking through the grain fields? That's possible, I suppose, but doubtful, unless the grainfields were so large that it took too long to walk through them.
This is not all that important, of course, but whether they became hungry, or were already hungry, the KJV covers either possibility.
So we are not given to know whether the disciples were already hungry when they entered the cornfield, or became hungry afterwards. Which translators, do you suppose, selected the right word to cover both possibilities?
